Creating a strong free edge without spending extra time on filing is one of the key skills every professional nail technician should master. The secret lies in proper jelly gel application and understanding how the material behaves during modeling.
In this example, we'll use Saga Professional Stiff Gel, a high-viscosity jelly gel designed for nail strengthening, extension, repairs and architecture correction.

The most important goal is to achieve a seamless transition from the natural nail to the gel.
Start by applying a thin slip layer of jelly gel over the area that needs reinforcement. This creates excellent adhesion and helps the next layer blend naturally into the nail surface.

Without curing the slip layer, place the required amount of gel onto the free edge.
Avoid pressing, dabbing, or making random, aggressive brush movements. These motions create unnecessary bumps and unevenness, which means more filing later.
Hold the brush almost parallel to the nail plate, allowing it to glide lightly over the material rather than pushing it around. Think of the brush as floating just above the gel, helping it settle into the correct shape.
This technique creates a much cleaner surface and significantly reduces the amount of filing required after curing.
And what's the result? I think it's pretty obvious which of these two nails will be much easier to the filling.
After curing, perform only minimal filing to refine the shape if necessary.
Complete the reinforcement by leveling the nail with a camouflage base, creating a flawless natural appearance and perfect nail architecture.
Mastering a few simple jelly gel techniques allows you to create stronger, cleaner, and more professional-looking nails with less effort.
